The Oklahoma City metro area ended 2009 with the lowest jobless rate in the nation for metropolitan areas with a population of 1 million or more, the U.S. Labor Department reported Tuesday.
The metro area’s unseasonably adjusted unemployment rate for December was 6 percent, besting the 6.2 percent rate for Washington, D.C. New Orleans and San Antonio tied for third with 6.8 percent, followed by a 6.9 percent tie for the Austin, Texas, and Virginia Beach, Va., areas.
Oklahoma City metro area defied a national trend that had 306 of 372 areas posting rising rates. Rates fell in 41 areas and were unchanged in 25, the labor department stated.
